Dust Off, No Spots Left Behind
Solar panel cleaning is the one job on this site where we do not use a pressure washer. Panels are tempered glass in aluminum frames with seals and wiring behind them, and a high-pressure stream can force water past seals or damage the glass coating. We clean them by hand with soft brushes and filtered water, which removes dust and droppings and dries without mineral spots.
Why Anaheim panels get dirty
Anaheim gets about 14 inches of rain a year, so panels can go months without a natural rinse, and light rain often just turns dust into streaks. Santa Ana winds, named for the canyon just east of the city, carry dust that coats panels in a single event. Bird droppings, leaf litter and nearby road or construction dust add to it. EnergySage advises cleaning about every six months in dry, dusty areas, and HomeGuide suggests one or two cleanings a year in most cases and more after storms or in dusty conditions.
The hard-water problem
The City of Anaheim puts its water hardness at about 300 parts per million, or about 18 grains per gallon. Rinse panels with that water and let it dry, and it leaves a film of calcium and magnesium spots on the glass. EnergySage notes that tap water and abrasive tools can cause hard-water stains and residue, and that professionals use purified water. We rinse with filtered water so panels dry clear.
Protecting your warranty
Panel manufacturers publish cleaning instructions, and HomeGuide notes that cleaning should be done in a way that does not void the panel warranty. Those instructions typically call for soft brushes, mild or no detergent, and no high pressure or abrasive pads. EnergySage notes that scratching or damaging the glass can reduce output and may void the warranty, and HomeGuide advises against glass cleaner because it can degrade coatings. If you know your panel brand, tell us and we will follow that manufacturer's guidance. If your system is leased, check the maintenance terms first; some leases include cleaning.
Safety on the roof
Most residential panels sit on tile or shingle roofs. We work from ladders and the roof edge where we can, avoid stepping on panels, and on tile roofs step only where tiles are supported. We do not touch wiring, connectors or the inverter, and we do not open any part of the system. If we see damaged wiring, cracked glass or loose mounts, we stop and tell you so you can call your installer.
Runoff
Solar cleaning uses very little water, but what comes off the panels runs into gutters and downspouts. As with any job, we make sure it soaks into landscaping instead of reaching the curb or a storm drain.
Checking the result
If your system has a monitoring app, compare output on a clear day before and after the cleaning. That is the simplest way to see whether dust was holding production back and how often your panels need it.

How It Works
1. Check the array
We count panels, check roof type and access, and note the panel brand if visible.
2. Dry brush
Loose dust, leaves and droppings are brushed off first.
3. Wash
Soft brushes with filtered water and, if needed, a mild cleaner the manufacturer allows.
4. Filtered rinse
A final rinse with filtered water so the glass dries clear.

Solar Panel Cleaning Questions
Can you pressure wash solar panels?
We do not. High pressure can force water past seals and damage the glass coating, and manufacturer instructions generally call for gentle cleaning. We use soft brushes and filtered water.
How much does solar panel cleaning cost?
HomeGuide lists $10 to $20 per panel, or $150 to $500 for a typical 15- to 25-panel home system, and EnergySage cites about $150 to $350. We quote in writing based on your panel count and roof.
How often should solar panels be cleaned in Anaheim?
EnergySage suggests about every six months in dry, dusty areas, and HomeGuide suggests once or twice a year, plus after storms. Checking your monitoring app for drops in output is a good guide.
Why not just hose them off?
Anaheim's water is hard, about 18 grains per gallon, and it leaves mineral spots as it dries. Filtered water dries clear.
